Bill, are you around, dear? Or Luna?

Mum! Hullo! Yeah, I'm just getting some work done.

Oh, wonderful, dear! I wanted to let you or Luna know that I've decided on a song for the mother-son dance at the wedding. She did imply that she needed it quickly so that the band could begin practicing, and I thought calling would be quicker than an owl or the e mail.

Mother-son dance? There's a-, right. So you found a song you like?

I was thinking about "What a Wonderful Wizard You've Become" by Celestina Warbeck. It's really quite appropriate for the day. I particularly like the part where she says "I've loved to watch you grow and learn, as the world around us turns, You're big and brave and handsome, too, I can't say how proud I am of you."

... Er, Celestina Warbeck! Ah, right. That's... her song, yeah.

Yes, it will make for quite a beautiful moment, don't you think? Would you mind passing the word on to Luna, dear?

I can tell Luna, yeah. Ah, it'll be... something. So you really like that song?

Oh, yes, it's quite lovely. Unless you or Luna have other ideas, of course. And speaking of other ideas, I must admit to being extremely curious as to why Luna has chosen to add sugarpaste duckweed to the cake?

Luna asked you for the song, I'm sure she doesn't have anything in mind.

Sugarpaste duckweed to the cake? *a laugh* We do have a bit of a history with duckweed. For that, maybe?

History with duckweed? How in Merlin's name did you manage that?

Well, there's the time she pushed me into the pond at the Hollow and I ended up covered in pond scum and duckweed. And then there was the wager we had about whether I could make duckweed edible. Dad would remember that one; he ate the first batch.

You fed your father duckweed??

That was his reaction!

Not intentionally, it was in the kitchen and you know how he is. He ate it without question. Didn't turn green until after, and I told him what it was made of. *a laugh* Said he thought it was a bit mean to be feeding a poor girl duckweed.

What did you make with it, if you don't mind me asking?

Cold soup, and some sandwiches with the crusts cut off, yeah? And I sprinkled a bit on top of the pudding, but that was just for swank.

Really? I didn't know it was even edible. Perhaps I ought to suggest to Luna that we incorporate it into the menu, if she found the memory appealing enough to commemorate it on the cake.

It is! I looked it up, yeah? It's actually a very good vegetable, just a bit small. Not that Dad would believe me. He still calls it pond scum.

Oh, and I'm handling the food. The caterers cancelled and Luna couldn't find another to take on the job, so she gave the whole thing to me. I've got it covered. No duckweed, though. Doesn't really fit the theme.

You're handling the food? What theme are you working with, dear?

Yeah, I figured restaurants are as good as caterers, right? Maybe better. So I went to my favorites in London and a this one place in Edinburgh for Egyptian food. Well, North African. As good as one can have it and not be there.

Oh, but don't tell Luna, yeah? It's a clue about the honeymoon, and she'll figure it out for sure if she has time to think about it.

It's good, you'll like it! Stews and grilled meats and rice and couscous, and salads. Lots of salads. Oh yeah, and some fish and a squab dish, and sweets for pudding, in case the cake isn't enough. It'll be great, and no worries!

It sounds like quite a variety... Does North African food have any common spices or ingredients that our guests might be allergic to? It won't do to take people to St. Mungo's in the middle of the reception, so don't forget to provide for everyone's needs, dear.

No worries. Plenty of variety and something for everyone. And it's buffet, so if they don't want something they can give it a pass.

Say, Mum, since I have you, any advice on how to talk about something to someone who doesn't want to talk about it?

Well, as long as you're sure... Little things like that just ruin a day, and it's so hard to anticipate them in advance.

Talking with someone who doesn't want to talk? Are you looking for general advice, dear, or can you give me a few specifics?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

It'll be good, Mum. You'll see.

Right, well it's Luna, yeah? There's things she never talks about and I know it's important and she thinks about it, but how do I bring it up without upsetting her? I mean, I can't just say out of the blue "Luna, talk to me about your parents," right? Or should I? It's what I want to do, but it never seems the right time.
