Conversation with Percy Weasley at the Burrow
Is that everything, dear? Is there space for all this over at Ginny's place?

Yes, I think so. I can shrink the trunks if I have to. This way I don't have to Apparate back every time I need a new pair of cuff links.

Well, you'll probably be needing new pairs now that you're in a political race. There are reporters who will notice things like that, as irrelevant as it is to the actual office.

I was being figurative. These have a charm on them. I can change the style to suit the robes. Although I do need new robes. I'll go to Diagon Alley in the morning.

Ah. Yes, that's much more practical. I should get your father a pair.

What are your campaign plans, dear?

Public speaking engagements, the debate, meeting as many people as possible and convincing them that I'm by far the more able and well spoken, polished and prepared candidate for high office. The usual, why?

Well... I think you might want to have an idea of how to answer the inevitable questions about your past, dear. People are bound to wonder why you spent so many years out of the country.

My past? The part where I was critical to the diplomatic relations in the recent war efforts or the part where I worked at the highest level of government for several years before moving abroad to work in foreign relations?

The part where you ended up, ah, attached to someone unexpected.

Yes, well that can't be avoided. And really, no one's going to pay attention to the Ministry election with Harry running for Parliament. Everyone's running about trying to learn everything they can about Parliament, since they didn't realise we had a seat.

True, dear, but - not to be blunt - you're a fool if you don't think Scrimgeor will make certain the electorate knows about it if he thinks you've the slightest chance of winning.

Let him. After Knightly's lycanthropy, my disastrous marriage is tediously plebeian. That doesn't change the fact that the Ministry and the governing of Wizarding Britain should not go to someone who enjoys the control he has over the MLE a little too much. And I'll be speaking out on that as often and as loudly as I can.

As you should, dear. But nevertheless, Knightly did not have to deal with his lycanthropy on the campaign trail.

I just don't want you to get your hopes up too high, dear.

My hopes are entirely realistic. I appreciate the caution, Mum, but I know what I'm doing. It will be hard fought, dirty politics, and no doubt dreadfully expensive.

And what are your hopes, exactly, if you don't mind me asking? We'll support you all the way, dear, and you would be a much better minister than Scrimgeor, but you've not told us much past the fact that you're running.

Thanks, Mum. Ah, yeah. Right, so if you listened to the press conference, I'm running on a progressive but practical platform with reforms in place for a number of inefficient and outdated systems that cost more than they're worth. The Ministry has offices still lagging behind in the 11th Century; we're a millenium past that! Efficiency and effectiveness. A government that works as it works.

Er, yeah. I know it will be a hard campaign. And frankly, the more expensive and the louder, the more pleased I'll be. If I don't win this time 'round, they won't have to ask who I am the next time.

It's politics, Mum. Not the kind of stuff Dad deals with. This is the real scrum.

Yes, most witches and wizards in political campaigns here tend to refrain from killing their opponents. Quite different from what your father and I deal with.

Well, good then. It appears you know what you're getting into. But... just how expensive do you expect this to be?

*a sigh* Not that, Mum. The office bickering and the jockeying for position. Department Heads are all well and good, and I know you do good work in the field, but this is a different kind of fight altogether. And if you think government can't be as dangerous and deadly as-, well you're wrong yeah? I think the last war proved that point sufficiently well.

A hundred galleons a day. As a conservative estimate.

OUR?

Percy Ignatius Weasley, if you think your father and I are bankrolling your run for Minister of Magic on the salary of two Ministry employees, you are sorely mistaken.

Merlin, Mum what-? Of course I don't plan on using your money! *an exasperated sigh*

MY vault, mine and Niko's. The one he won't let me use freely. The one he monitors.

Ah. Oh. Right. I'm sorry dear, I just misinterpreted for a moment.

Well, then, do proceed. Perhaps you might want to raise your estimate to 150 galleons a day?

Yeah, I will. Merlin, I have to run, Mum. I've got a strategy meeting with some volunteers in ten minutes and I'm going to be late. I'll see you and Dad tomorrow. Goodnight!
